Unit for the Combat of Child Labour in Lebanon at the Ministry of Labour

• Definition:
It is a specialized Unit, within the Ministry of Labour, concerned with
the fight against of child labour and with its progressive elimination.
Its objective is to raise awareness on hazardous child labour and to
coordinate efforts between the different government administrations, the
civil society organizations and the regional and international
organizations.
• Goal:
Eradicate child labour by:
- raising awareness on the child labour problem;
- Making widely known the international and Arab conventions on child
labour;
- contributing to the development, unification and classification of
national laws related to child labour;
- contributing to the establishment of national strategies and action
plans to enforce the eradication of child labour.
• Reasons for the establishment of the
Unit:
The magnitude and the negative impact of the child labour problem on
children in particular, and on the society as a whole, in general.
• Fields of action:
- Contribute to the development and enforcemment of laws related to
child labour;
- Define the worst forms of child labour;
- Seek to involve the local community in development programs aimed at
the combat of child labour;
- Raise awareness on the dangers of child labour;
- Disseminate the child’s rights stressing on the right of each child to
free and compulsory education;
- Receive complaints and petitions regarding the transgression of the
legal provisions related to child labour;
- Establish a database on child labour;
- Establish a specialized library on child labour;
- Establish an Internet Web Site on child labour;
- Develop vocational training programs for working children (above 15
years old);
- Organize specialized training sessions for those concerned with child
labour.
